Why Pacific Outdoor Living

Designed Right. Built Right. Coordinated From Start to Finish.

Montrose landscapes deserve more than generic improvement. They need a plan that respects the site, mature nature, biodiversity, and the practical realities of construction.

Designed for Smaller Foothill Lots

Montrose lots are more compact than the estate parcels further up the hill, and the design problem is different: how to fit dining, lounging, cooking, and circulation into a modest footprint without it feeling crowded. That takes drawing rather than shopping, which is why every project starts with a measured Site Analysis and a designed plan instead of a materials list.

Wholesale Material Advantages

We source through long-standing supplier relationships and pass our wholesale material discounts through to you instead of treating them as an upsell. On a smaller Montrose yard, where every surface is visible, being able to compare paver colors and stone finishes in person before ordering matters more, not less.

One Coordinated Process

Tight sites are unforgiving about sequence and access. Running design, permits, demolition, drainage, hardscape, planting, and lighting with our own in-house crews keeps the number of trucks on a narrow Montrose street down and keeps the project moving instead of waiting on an outside subcontractor.

Designing for Montrose

What to Consider When Planning a Montrose Outdoor Space

Small Foothill Lots, Designed to Feel Larger

Montrose is a walkable pocket of the Crescenta Valley built largely in the 1920s through the 1940s, and the housing stock reflects it: Spanish bungalows, traditional cottages, and mid-century homes on lots that are comfortable rather than sprawling. The design opportunity here is not a resort backyard. It is a well-proportioned outdoor room that gets used every evening.

That usually means one strong gathering space rather than three weak ones. A generous paver terrace, an outdoor fireplace or fire table for the cool foothill evenings, built-in seating instead of bulky furniture, and planting arranged in layers so a small yard still has depth. Vertical elements do a lot of work at this scale, from trellis and privacy screening to a compact water feature.

The site conditions are the same as the rest of the valley. Lots slope toward Foothill, the soil is alluvial cobble, and winter runoff arrives from above. Solving drainage first is what protects the finished surfaces, and on a smaller property there is no room to hide a mistake.

Designing for Montrose

Getting Full Value Out of a Compact Foothill Yard

Montrose combines older, character-rich homes with modest sloping lots and the Crescenta Valley’s runoff and cobble soil. Good design here is about proportion and sequence.

One Strong Gathering Space

Rather than splitting a small yard into several half-sized zones, we build one generous terrace that genuinely seats the group you host, then let planting and level changes do the rest of the work.

02

Built-In Instead of Bulky

Seat walls, built-in benches, and integrated planters return floor area that loose furniture eats up, and they let a compact patio host more people without feeling packed.

03

Drainage Under Everything

Runoff from uphill still crosses these lots. Drains, pipe, and finish grades go in before the base rock, because retrofitting drainage under a finished paver terrace means taking the terrace apart.

Planting That Suits the Architecture

Olive, rosemary, lavender, westringia, sages, and ornamental grasses sit naturally against Montrose’s Spanish and Craftsman homes, keep water use low, and stay in scale on a smaller lot.

Local FAQs

Questions About Planning a Project in Montrose

Does Pacific Outdoor Living serve Montrose?

Yes. Montrose is within our Greater Los Angeles service region, and we work throughout the Crescenta Valley. Use the address checker on this page to confirm coverage for your exact property.

Is my Montrose yard big enough for an outdoor kitchen?

Usually, if it is designed rather than dropped in. A compact grill island with counter space on one side, positioned so the cook is part of the conversation instead of facing a wall, works well on lots this size. The bigger constraint is normally utility routing, which we plan during design.

Can a small backyard still fit a spa or plunge pool?

Often yes. A spa or a small plunge pool can work where a full-size pool cannot, and on a compact lot it frequently gets used more. Access for equipment and the required setbacks are what we check first.

Do older Montrose homes need special attention during a remodel?

They benefit from it. Original hardscape, mature trees, and existing grade often carry the character of the property, so we work out what is worth keeping before demolition rather than clearing everything and starting over.

What does a backyard remodel cost in Montrose?

Scope drives it. A patio and planting refresh is a different investment than a full remodel with drainage, walls, an outdoor kitchen, and lighting. A consultation is the fastest way to get numbers specific to your property. Schedule a Consultation
