Designing for Templeton

What to Consider When Planning a Templeton Outdoor Space

Elevated spa overlooking a panoramic valley view

Built for Rural, Oak-Studded Properties

Templeton's hot, dry summers and cooler nights make shade, water efficiency, and fire-conscious planting central to nearly every design decision on its oak-studded, rural-scale properties.

We use drought-tolerant and fire-conscious native planting, shade structures and pergolas to make afternoons livable, and durable materials built for the wide swing between summer heat and winter cold.

Designing for Templeton

Heat- and Shade-Smart Design for Templeton

Templeton’s hot, dry summers and rural-scale properties mean heat, shade, water efficiency, and fire-conscious planning shape plant and material choices as much as the design itself.

Fire-Conscious, Drought-Tolerant Planting

Valley oak companions, western redbud, toyon, manzanita, ceanothus, sages, buckwheats, and deer grass are common choices, selected for defensible space and low water use.

Heat & Shade Design

Hot, dry summers make shade structures, pergolas, and lawn reduction recurring priorities for Templeton’s inland location. We plan shade and airflow around how you actually use the yard.

03

Water-Wise Irrigation

Efficient drip irrigation, mulch, and reduced turf help control water costs across larger, rural-scale properties without sacrificing a lush, livable yard.

Rural-Property Planning

Expansive lots, drainage and erosion, and rural access all factor into planning a property at Templeton scale. We design around the whole parcel, not just the patio.

The existing residence, garage, driveway and guest house had lawn, decomposed granite and concrete around them, plus paver walks, mulch and beds. We mapped the spa, the patios and the garden paths to show how the yard was organized before changing any of it.

What had been lawn became the poolside. Layered beds and accent trees soften the hardscape edges and add privacy, so the pool reads as the main event on the property now instead of one feature among several.
