Why Pacific Outdoor Living

Designed Right. Built Right. Coordinated From Start to Finish.

Tarzana landscapes deserve more than generic improvement. They need a plan that respects the site, mature nature, biodiversity, and the practical realities of construction.

Hillside Review and Permitting Built In

Tarzana south of Ventura Boulevard climbs into the Santa Monica Mountains, which brings City of Los Angeles hillside grading review, retaining wall engineering, and brush clearance into what might otherwise be a straightforward pool and patio project. Our permitting department identifies which of those apply at design stage so the drawings are built to clear them.

Wholesale Material Advantages

We source through long-standing supplier relationships and pass our wholesale material discounts through to you instead of treating them as an upsell. You get the material deals we get, and you can visit our showroom to compare finishes in person before final selections are made.

One Coordinated Process

On a Tarzana hillside lot, the retaining, the pool shell, the equipment routing, and the drainage all have to agree with each other. Running design, engineering coordination, permits, and construction with our own in-house crews is what keeps those decisions consistent from the first survey to the final walkthrough.

What to Consider When Planning a Tarzana Outdoor Space

Two Kinds of Lot, Two Different Design Problems

North of Ventura Boulevard, Tarzana is flat and generous. The lots came out of the old ranch land, they take a pool and a full entertaining program comfortably, and the design question is mostly about zoning the space and getting shade over the parts you use in the afternoon.

South of the boulevard, the ground rises into the Santa Monica Mountains and everything changes. Level ground has to be built, retaining walls carry a large share of the budget, equipment and materials access becomes a real planning item, and the reward is a view that flat lots simply do not have. Designing for that view means keeping sightlines open, setting seating at the right elevation, and using railings and low planting rather than solid mass at the edge.

Both halves share Valley heat and, on the hillside side, brush clearance obligations. The plant palette that handles a hundred-degree August and satisfies a clearance inspection is largely the same palette, which is convenient: low-fuel, low-water, well-spaced, and irrigated where it counts.

Designing for Tarzana

Slope, Views, Heat, and Brush Clearance

Tarzana runs from flat former ranch land in the north up into the Santa Monica Mountains in the south, and the two halves ask for genuinely different plans.

Designing to the View

On the hillside lots the view is the asset. Seating elevation, railing choice, planting height at the edge, and where the pool coping lands all get set so the outlook is framed rather than fenced off.

Building Level Ground

Usable flat area on a Tarzana slope has to be constructed. We size retaining walls and step-downs alongside the patio and pool layout, so the structure and the design are drawn together instead of one chasing the other.

Brush Clearance on the Mountain Side

Properties in the higher fire hazard zones are inspected. We keep the first several feet around the structure free of combustible material, use irrigated low-growing planting in the near zone, and break up fuel continuity with hardscape and spacing.

Valley Heat Management

Tarzana afternoons run hot and dry. Shade over the dining and cooking areas, lighter paving colors, deciduous trees on the west exposure, and a pool placed where people will actually get in are what extend the usable season.

Questions About Planning a Project in Tarzana

Does Pacific Outdoor Living serve Tarzana?

Yes. Tarzana is within our Greater Los Angeles service region, on both sides of Ventura Boulevard. Use the address checker on this page to confirm coverage for your exact property.

Can you build a pool on a steep Tarzana hillside lot?

Yes, and it is common work for us. The planning items are shoring and access for equipment, how much retaining the pad requires, where the equipment can sit and be serviced, and how the plumbing and electrical are routed across the grade. Those get resolved during design, not during excavation.

How much of the budget goes to retaining on a hillside project?

More than most homeowners expect, because it happens before anything visible gets built. On a steeply falling lot the walls and grading can be the largest single line item. That is why we shoot grades and price the structural work early rather than at the end.

Will fire clearance requirements limit what I can plant?

They shape the near-house zone more than the rest of the property. Close to the structure the planting stays low, irrigated, and well maintained, with no continuous fuel. Further out, once spacing and access are respected, the garden can be considerably more expressive.

What does a hillside backyard project cost in Tarzana?

It depends on how much of the site has to be built before it can be finished. A Site Analysis is what converts the slope into real numbers, and our design-build process is built to keep confirmed projects on schedule and on budget. Schedule a Consultation
