Why Pacific Outdoor Living

Designed Right. Built Right. Coordinated From Start to Finish.

Encino landscapes deserve more than generic improvement. They need a plan that respects the site, mature nature, biodiversity, and the practical realities of construction.

City of Los Angeles Permitting Handled In-House

Encino projects run through City of Los Angeles Building and Safety, and the two things that most often slow them down are protected trees and hillside review south of Ventura Boulevard. Coast live oak, valley oak, western sycamore, and California black walnut are protected in the city, and work near them needs to be planned, not discovered. Our permitting department maps that at design stage.

Wholesale Material Advantages

We source through long-standing supplier relationships and pass our wholesale material discounts through to you instead of treating them as an upsell. On Encino estate lots the paving, coping, and veneer quantities are large enough that the wholesale difference shows up directly in the bottom line.

One Coordinated Process

A full Encino backyard usually means pool, spa, hardscape, kitchen, shade structure, lighting, irrigation, and planting on one site at one time. Keeping every one of those with our own in-house crews is what lets the sequence stay tight instead of stalling between subcontractors.

Designing for Encino

What to Consider When Planning an Encino Outdoor Space

Designing for Heat, Space, and Oak Canopy

Encino has two very different kinds of property. North of Ventura Boulevard the lots run wide and flat, often a third of an acre or more, which is why so many of the Valley’s serious backyards are here. South of the boulevard the ground climbs into the Santa Monica Mountains, and the same square footage arrives on a slope with views, hillside review, and brush clearance attached.

Both share the same climate problem. Encino sits in the hottest stretch of the San Fernando Valley, with summer afternoons that regularly run past a hundred degrees and very little marine relief. A beautiful backyard that has no shade at four in the afternoon in July simply does not get used, so shade structures, tree placement, and orientation are design decisions, not accessories.

The community is also named for its oaks, and they are protected. Coast live oak, valley oak, western sycamore, and California black walnut all carry protections under the City of Los Angeles tree ordinance. Where a mature oak sits in the middle of the plan, it becomes the anchor of the design and the hardscape works around its root zone.

Designing for Encino

Heat, Canopy, and Estate-Scale Layout

Encino combines some of the largest residential lots in the San Fernando Valley with some of its hottest afternoons and a canopy of protected native trees.

Shade Is Infrastructure

We look at the sun path before the furniture plan. Covered structures over dining, deciduous trees on the west exposure, and pergolas positioned for late-afternoon relief are what determine whether the yard gets used in August.

Building Around Protected Trees

Coast live oak, valley oak, sycamore, and black walnut are protected in the City of Los Angeles. We map the root zone first, hold hardscape edges outside it, use permeable surfaces where a path must cross, and keep new irrigation away from the trunk.

03

Zoning a Large Lot

On a third-acre backyard the risk is a wide, undifferentiated space. Level changes, planting masses, structures, and lighting are used to create distinct rooms so the yard feels composed rather than simply large.

Water-Wise Without Looking Sparse

Westringia, rosemary, sages, ceanothus, ornamental grasses, and olive read as lush in the Valley heat while running on drip. Hydrozoning and smart controllers keep the irrigation honest through a dry summer.

Questions About Planning a Project in Encino

Does Pacific Outdoor Living serve Encino?

Yes. Encino is within our Greater Los Angeles service region and our Sun Valley yard and showroom are a short drive away. Use the address checker on this page to confirm coverage for your exact property.

There is a large oak in the middle of my backyard. Can I still build a pool?

Often yes, but the tree usually sets the layout rather than the other way around. Coast live oaks and other native species are protected in the City of Los Angeles, so we map the critical root zone during design and place the pool shell, decking, and trenching outside it. Work that encroaches on a protected tree requires city review, which we plan for up front.

How do you make an Encino backyard usable in summer heat?

With built shade and orientation, mostly. Covered structures over the dining and cooking areas, pergolas placed for the western afternoon sun, deciduous shade trees where they will do the most good, and a pool positioned where people will actually use it. Fans, misting, and lighter paving colors help at the margins.

Do hillside lots south of Ventura Boulevard have extra requirements?

They typically do. Hillside grading review, retaining wall engineering, and brush clearance in the higher fire hazard zones all come into play. We identify which of those apply during the Site Analysis so the design is drawn to fit them from the start.

What does a full backyard remodel cost in Encino?

Scope drives it entirely. A pool and patio project is a very different investment than a complete estate landscape with kitchen, structures, lighting, and planting. A consultation and Site Analysis are the fastest way to get numbers specific to your property. Learn About Financing Options
