Why Pacific Outdoor Living

Designed Right. Built Right. Coordinated From Start to Finish.

Alhambra landscapes deserve more than generic improvement. They need a plan that respects the site, mature nature, biodiversity, and the practical realities of construction.

City of Alhambra Permitting Handled In-House

Alhambra runs its own Building Division and its own development standards, which is a different process than the County or the City of Los Angeles. Our permitting department knows how to assemble a submittal for a city this size and coordinates the plan check correspondence directly, so a pool, a structure, or a driveway approach does not stall waiting on a resubmittal you did not know was needed.

Wholesale Material Advantages

We source through long-standing supplier relationships and pass our wholesale material discounts through to you instead of treating them as an upsell. Alhambra homes carry real architectural character, so matching a paver or a stone to a 1920s Spanish or Craftsman house matters, and our showroom lets you compare finishes side by side before ordering.

One Coordinated Process

Design, materials, budget, scheduling, permits, planting, and construction stay connected from first measurements to final walkthrough, handled by our own in-house crews. On an older Alhambra property, where surprises hide under the original concrete, that continuity is what keeps a discovery from becoming a delay.

What to Consider When Planning an Alhambra Outdoor Space

Older Homes, Long Driveways, Real Character

Alhambra has one of the better-preserved early housing stocks in the San Gabriel Valley. Craftsman bungalows, Spanish Revival, and Mediterranean homes from the 1920s and 1930s sit on lots with detached garages at the back, which means a long driveway running the depth of the property. On many Alhambra homes that driveway is the single largest hardscape surface on the lot, and it is usually the original concrete.

Replacing it in pavers changes the whole property, and it is often the highest-impact project available. It also opens up a question worth asking: whether the space beside and behind the garage can become a real courtyard rather than a leftover strip of concrete. On lots of this shape, that side yard is frequently where the best outdoor room ends up.

The climate is inland San Gabriel Valley: hot, dry summers with strong afternoon sun and very little marine relief, on soil washed down from the San Gabriels that ranges from heavy clay to alluvial. Shade over the dining area, planting chosen for that heat, and irrigation that respects both the soil and the water bill are what keep the finished yard healthy.

Designing for Alhambra

San Gabriel Valley Heat and Early-Century Homes

Alhambra pairs 1920s and 1930s architecture with deep lots, long driveways, and a hot inland climate. Those three facts shape almost every project here.

The Driveway Is the Opportunity

On a lot with a detached rear garage, the driveway is the largest visible surface. Rebuilding it in pavers, with the drainage and base depth done properly, transforms the property and solves the cracked-concrete problem at the same time.

02

Detailing to Match the House

A 1925 Spanish Revival and a 1930s Craftsman want different materials. We choose paver color, stone, tile accents, and planting to suit the architecture rather than applying one contemporary treatment to every property.

Room for the Whole Family

Alhambra households often host across three generations. That means dining that genuinely seats twelve, circulation wide enough to move through comfortably, and seating arranged for conversation rather than for a photograph.

Heat and Heavy Soil

Inland summers are long and the ground can be dense clay. Soil improvement in the planting beds, mulch depth, drip irrigation, and heat-tolerant species such as rosemary, westringia, sages, olive, and citrus are what keep a garden here thriving.

Local FAQs

Questions About Planning a Project in Alhambra

Does Pacific Outdoor Living serve Alhambra?

Yes. Alhambra is within our Greater Los Angeles service region and we work throughout the west San Gabriel Valley. Use the address checker on this page to confirm coverage for your exact property.

Is a paver driveway better than pouring new concrete?

For a long Alhambra driveway, usually yes. Pavers can be lifted and reset if a section settles or a utility needs access, individual units can be swapped without leaving a visible patch, and the pattern suits period architecture far better than a plain slab. The base preparation underneath is what determines how long either option lasts.

Can the narrow space beside my house become usable?

Often it becomes the best room on the property. A side courtyard with proper paving, screening, lighting, and a compact seating or dining arrangement turns dead frontage into everyday space, and on Alhambra lot shapes there is frequently more of it than people realize.

Does the clay soil here affect what I can plant?

It affects how we prepare, more than what you can grow. Dense soil holds water at the root crown and drains slowly, so beds get amended and graded, planting depth is set carefully, and irrigation runs are shorter and more frequent rather than long and heavy.

What does a backyard or driveway project cost in Alhambra?

Scope drives it. A driveway and front yard project is a different investment than a full backyard remodel with a kitchen, structures, and lighting. A consultation is the fastest way to get numbers specific to your property. Schedule a Consultation
